AI Policy

Our designs are meant to showcase Catholic art as it exists both today and historically, so we are sensitive to the issue of AI in image generation.

Virtually all of our desgins feature images that we ourselves have taken or which have been taken by our partners. Some feature historical images available in the open domain.

Our privacy policy can be summarised as:

  • We do not use AI to generate designs which feature faces if these desgins are to be used on products
    • We allow ourselves the use of AI to generate  digital colouring book pages. These we do not use on our products, and in any case the final version is determined by the person who colours them in.
  • We may use AI to generate images featuring only geometric designs, such as for instances crosses, hearts, flowers and other shapes.
    • Our preference is always to use photographs of real objects even in these cases.

A concrete example is that of a cross vs. a crucifix. A cross is a series of geometrical shapes, which may be augmented by even more geometrical shapes to make it quite extravagant. A crucifix is a depiction of Our Blessed Lord on top of a cross. A crucifix depicts the body and face of Our Blessed Lord, and it is our opinion that this should not be simply computer-generated and out to be the result of physical human input in some way, a labour of love, if you will.

So while are willing to have crosses which are AI or computer-generated, any crucifix design would have to be a photograph of a physical crucifix, and ideally one which is antique, venerated or personal to the owner in some manner.
