This page is devoted to our designs featuring the Fleur de Lys.
The Fleur de Lys (or Fleur de Lis, meaning "lily flower") is a stylized symbol resembling a lily or iris, with three petals bound together at the base.
Its origins trace back to ancient civilizations, including Egypt and Mesopotamia, but it became most prominent in French heraldry and culture. By the 12th century, it was adopted by French kings— most notably Louis VII —as a royal emblem, symbolizing purity, light, and divine right. The French monarchy used it extensively, linking it to the idea of sacred kingship.
The Fleur de Lys also holds deep religious significance in Catholic tradition, where it became associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The white lily is a traditional symbol of Mary's purity, chastity, and immaculate conception. In religious art, the Archangel Gabriel is often depicted holding a fleur-de-lys when announcing the Incarnation to Mary, and saints like Joseph and Dominic are shown receiving lilies from her.
Over time, the stylized Fleur de Lys came to represent not just the physical lily but also spiritual perfection and grace.
In Marian iconography, the Fleur de Lys appears in halos, robes, and architectural details of churches dedicated to her. It is frequently seen in religious medals, such as the Miraculous Medal, and in devotional art, reinforcing Mary’s role as the "Mystical Rose" and "Lily among thorns." The symbol's tripartite form was sometimes interpreted as representing the Holy Trinity, further sanctifying its use.
